Finding a typographic voice for a brand

Find a distinctive voice that remains consistent across print and digital media.

Sources checked

Replace ‘stylish’ with three useful words

A broad adjective leaves too many candidates. Try ‘calm, approachable, orderly,’ then type the actual brand name. Its repeated letters, capitals, and spacing matter more than a sample phrase. Compare it at sign size and in a small profile image.

Put opening hours beside the name

A face that suits a short logo may struggle with addresses or practical instructions. Pair the name with supporting text and look for one shared quality, such as roundness or firm strokes. You do not have to use two different families. In a large wordmark, adjust an awkward letter pair without spreading every letter apart.

List the intended uses before choosing

A logo image, a webfont, an app-bundled font, a modified file, and redistributed files are separate items to check. Compare the planned uses with each candidate’s official terms instead of relying on a ‘free’ label. Keep the source URL and review date so the next person can find the same evidence.

The name and visitor information have different jobs in this fictional bookshop. A distinctive title face needs a separate small-number check. Separating roles can preserve character while reducing mistakes.

Try it step by step

  1. Prepare the real-length name, hours, address, and closure notice.
  2. Compare one family throughout with separate name and information roles.
  3. Check both signage and small profile or receipt sizes.
  4. Record intended media and official terms for each candidate. Logo images and distribution of font files are different uses.

A fictional brand exercise. Judge the name for character and the hours for quick reading, at both sign and small-label sizes.

Try this comparison sequence

  1. Search for “display” to narrow the candidates.
  2. Replace the preview with real copy from your brand system.
  3. Compare a few faces at the same size, then adjust weight and spacing in the final medium.
  4. Check language coverage, the official source, and license terms for your intended use on the detail page.
